Question 1

How much does tax resolution cost in Old Forge, PA?

Accepted Answer

Most tax resolution services in Old Forge charge between $2,500-$5,000 depending on the complexity of your case. We don't charge any upfront fees - you only pay after we accept your case and begin working. The cost depends on which tax relief program you need. Simple installment agreements cost less than complex Offers in Compromise that require extensive financial documentation. We give you an exact quote during your free consultation so there are no surprises. Most clients save far more in reduced tax debt than they pay in professional fees. If we can reduce a $50,000 tax debt to $5,000 through an Offer in Compromise, the professional fee becomes insignificant compared to your savings.

Question 2

Can I really settle my tax debt for less than I owe?

Accepted Answer

Yes, through the IRS Offer in Compromise program, but you have to qualify financially. The IRS will only accept an offer if it represents the most they can realistically collect from you given your income, expenses, and asset situation.About 26% of Offers in Compromise get accepted when people file them on their own. Professional representation increases your acceptance rate significantly because we know exactly how to present your financial information and which documentation the IRS requires. The key is proving you either can't pay the full amount or that paying would create genuine financial hardship. This requires detailed financial analysis and proper presentation to the IRS - not something most people can do effectively on their own.

Question 3

How long does tax resolution take in Pennsylvania?

Accepted Answer

Simple installment agreements can be set up within 30-60 days. More complex cases like Offers in Compromise typically take 6-12 months for the IRS to process and make a decision.Pennsylvania state tax cases often resolve faster than federal cases. The PA Department of Revenue has streamlined some of their processes, though they've also become stricter about payment plan terms in recent years. We can usually stop immediate collection actions like wage garnishments within days of starting your case. This gives you breathing room while we work on the permanent resolution. The key is starting the process before your situation gets worse.

Question 4

What happens if the IRS rejects my Offer in Compromise?

Accepted Answer

If your initial offer gets rejected, you have 30 days to appeal the decision or submit a revised offer with additional documentation. Many offers that get rejected initially can be successful on appeal with the right presentation. The most common rejection reasons are incomplete financial documentation or offers that are too low based on your ability to pay. Professional representation helps avoid these issues from the start by ensuring your offer is properly prepared and documented.Even if an Offer in Compromise isn't approved, other tax relief options remain available. We can often negotiate installment agreements or Currently Not Collectible status that still provides significant relief from your tax debt.

Question 5

Will tax resolution stop IRS wage garnishments immediately?

Accepted Answer

In most cases, yes. When we submit certain tax resolution applications like an Offer in Compromise or appeal, the IRS is required to suspend collection activities including wage garnishments while they review your case. For immediate garnishment relief, we can also request Currently Not Collectible status if you're experiencing financial hardship. This stops all collection activities while we work on a permanent solution to your tax debt. The key is acting quickly. Once a wage garnishment starts, it continues until the IRS receives proper documentation to stop it. We can usually get the necessary paperwork submitted within 24-48 hours of taking your case.

Question 6

Do I need a lawyer for tax resolution in Old Forge?

Accepted Answer

While not legally required, professional representation significantly increases your chances of success. Tax resolution involves complex financial analysis, detailed IRS procedures, and specific documentation requirements that most people aren't familiar with.Enrolled Agents and tax attorneys have special credentials that allow them to represent you directly with the IRS. This means all communication goes through your representative instead of you having to deal with IRS agents directly. The IRS accepts about 26% of Offers in Compromise filed by individuals on their own, but professional representation can increase acceptance rates to over 50%. Given the complexity of tax law and IRS procedures, professional help usually pays for itself through better outcomes.
