Question 1

How much can the Fresh Start Program reduce my tax debt?

Accepted Answer

Eligible taxpayers may reduce 90% or more of what they owe through an Offer in Compromise. Some qualify for 100% debt forgiveness if they can prove paying would create genuine economic hardship. The exact reduction depends on your income, necessary living expenses, and asset equity. The IRS uses specific formulas to calculate what you can reasonably pay. If you earn $3,000 monthly but have $2,800 in necessary expenses, they can't expect you to pay more than $200 monthly. Penalty abatement can eliminate thousands in additional penalties if you have reasonable cause for late filing or payment. Even installment agreements, while not reducing principal debt, stop penalties from growing and make payments manageable over 72 months.

Question 2

Do I qualify for the IRS Fresh Start Program in Robin Hood Lakes?

Accepted Answer

You may qualify if you owe $50,000 or less in combined taxes, penalties, and interest, are current on all tax filings, and can demonstrate financial hardship or inability to pay the full amount without economic strain. Self-employed individuals may qualify with a 25% or greater drop in income. The IRS also considers your monthly expenses versus income and whether paying the debt would prevent you from meeting basic living needs. Even if you owe more than $50,000, you might qualify by making a partial payment to reduce the balance below the threshold. During our free consultation, we review your complete financial picture to determine eligibility and recommend the best strategy for your specific situation.

Question 3

What's the difference between doing this myself versus hiring professionals?

Accepted Answer

The IRS accepts about 25% of Offers in Compromise submitted by taxpayers representing themselves. Professional representation dramatically improves your approval chances because we know exactly what documentation they require and how to present your financial information favorably. We also know how to calculate realistic offer amounts the IRS will actually accept. Too high, and you pay more than necessary. Too low, and they reject it outright. We understand their formulas and internal procedures from years of experience. Most importantly, we handle all IRS communication so you avoid saying something that hurts your case. One wrong statement during an IRS interview can disqualify you from programs you otherwise would have qualified for.

Question 4

How long does the Fresh Start Program process take?

Accepted Answer

Installment agreements typically get approved within 30-60 days once we submit complete applications. Offers in Compromise take longer—usually 6-24 months for the IRS to evaluate and make decisions. Currently-Not-Collectible status can often be achieved within 30-45 days with proper financial documentation. Penalty abatement requests usually receive responses within 60-90 days. The IRS has two years to respond to offers, and if they don't, your offer is automatically accepted. We handle all follow-up and communication during this time. The IRS suspends most collection activities while your application is pending, so you get relief from collection pressure while we work on your permanent resolution.

Question 5

What happens if the IRS rejects my application?

Accepted Answer

Professional representation significantly reduces rejection risk because we know exactly what the IRS requires and how to present your case properly. However, if rejection occurs, you have appeal rights and we can often resubmit with additional information. Common rejection reasons include incomplete financial documentation, unrealistic offer amounts, or failure to demonstrate genuine hardship. We avoid these issues by preparing comprehensive applications that meet all IRS requirements from the start. If one approach doesn't work, we have alternative strategies. Maybe you don't qualify for an Offer in Compromise but can get a manageable installment agreement. Or perhaps penalty abatement combined with Currently-Not-Collectible status provides the relief you need.
